Var Provence Cruise Club President

The cruise activity is a paramount for our region!  Our teams have been working for many years to promote the tourist attractivity of our destination, our magnificent Var department, and its 9 cruise ports of call. In September 2018, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the cruise club, the result of a close partnership between the Var CCI and the Var General Council, which aims to extend the economic benefits of this activity beyond the coastal area to the whole territory.

In 2019, we welcomed 232,000 cruise passengers in the Var department, with 204 stopovers.

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, which we suffered the full force with the sudden halt in activity, the outlook worldwide remains optimistic, with around 100 cruise ships under construction by 2027. These results reflect a stronger ambition that drives us over the long term. Let's not forget that the Mediterranean basin is the second largest market after the Caribbean and attracts passengers from all over the world. The French Mediterranean ports in our region have their card to play in terms of attractiveness and already alone capture half of the national traffic, i.e. 2.5 million passengers.

Thanks to their advantageous geographical location, our ports in the Var are becoming a must on the cruise itineraries of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Mediterranean arc and confirms the desire of the Southern Region to become THE leading host region for cruise activity in the Mediterranean. The economic weight of the cruise activity in the Southern Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region is estimated at 430 M € (for direct, indirect and induced spin-offs). And today's cruise passenger is THE future tourist of tomorrow! Results of the BVA study conducted in 2017, which shows that 63% of cruise passengers intend to return to stay with us in the next 3 years.

We must transform this conversion rate and consider that this cruise clientele arriving by sea is just as impactful for our territory as other tourists who come to stay with us and arrive by other means of transportation, by car, train or plane. Our objective is to highlight the importance of creating an ecosystem favourable to the development of the cruise industry and to underline the need to federate all our partners.

We all work in unison:
- To make Toulon, the Metropolis, the Var department and by extension the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, one of the leading and unavoidable cruise destination in the Med !
